What is a diagnostic assessment, and when can it help?

A diagnostic assessment is a process that uses interviews, observation and specific tests selected according to the reason for consultation to identify what may be affecting a child’s development or learning. We do not start with a label; we start by listening to what concerns you. Many families come to Mainds after a referral from school or because they notice that something is proving more difficult than expected. These are some of the most common reasons:

· Attention difficulties, impulsivity or restlessness (possible ADHD).

· Difficulties with communication or social interaction, or a strong need for routines (possible ASD).

· Difficulties with reading, writing or maths (dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia).

· Delayed or difficult language development (DLD).

· Possible giftedness or a need to understand the child’s cognitive profile.

· Emotional or behavioural difficulties affecting everyday life.

· A report for the school or EAP, or to guide an intervention.
